Boating, Fishing, and Travel Information for Fort Sumter, SC

Fort Sumter is located in Charleston, SC and is a sea fort that played a role in two battles of the Civil War. It is locaed in the mouth of the Cooper River between Sullivan’s Island and Morris Island. The fort was built after the War of 1812 and then the first Battle of Fort Sumter occurred in 1861 followed by the Second Battle of Fort Sumter in 1863 as an effort by the Union to retake Charleston. The fort is now part of a National Monument that includes Fort Sumter, Mort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island and the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center.
